KUALA LUMPUR – Former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin risks not having any important roles in the party should he lose the presidential election to Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah on June 30.
Razaleigh said Khairy must accept any outcome and has only himself to blame if he loses in the party elections.
Tengku Razaleigh added that Khairy should know the risk that comes with contesting for a position.
“He was too smart in choosing to contest, which he shouldn’t have. Anyone who contests in an election knows there is always a risk.
“Some wins, and some loses. Some are lucky, and some are not. So the future will decide his (Khairy’s) fate,” he said during a special meeting with about 200 Umno wing leaders at his residence, here, yesterday.
He was responding to a question from one of the youth delegates who asked the fate of Khairy should he lose in the polls, claiming it would be a huge loss if a respected figure as him was not given a role or position to play in Umno.
Razaleigh, or more popularly known as Ku Li, will face Khairy and incumbent vice-president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in the race for the party’s top post.
Earlier in his speech, Razaleigh said he was confident Umno would gain back federal power under his leadership, going as far as to claim that it might take less than five years (before the next general election) for the party to unseat the Pakatan Harapan government.
He said this would be possible if all Umno members rallied behind him and worked hard enough for the party.
“If we act with all our heart, better ourselves, then God’s willing, this (dream) will come true,” he said.
Razaleigh added that having accepted calls for him to run for the presidency, it was only right for Umno leaders and grassroots to repay him by voting him in.
“My job is done, now it is your turn. You must not only vote for me but call on all the rest to do the same.
“I am even willing to be your slave (hamba) as a president if you accept me and vote me for the position,” he said.
