MCO 2.0: Pasar malam now allowed; driving license renewal exempted

Night markets (pasar malam) are now allowed to operate under the updated standard operating procedures for the second movement control order (MCO 2.0).

The update, dated Jan 27, states that night markets can operate between 4pm and 10pm.

It was part of an update that allowed all businesses currently in operation to operate up to 10pm from 8pm previously.

Previously, night markets were not allowed to operate although regular markets in the day time were.

The updated SOPs also allowed MPs and assemblypersons to cross-district and state borders for official purposes and to visit their constituencies.

Meanwhile, the Transport Ministry announced that it is granting an exemption for personal motor vehicle license renewals from Feb 1 to March 31.

Those with expired licenses during the exemption period can now renew it by April 30 at the latest.

The exemption is not granted for commercial vehicle licenses.

Minister Wee Ka Siong in a statement said this was as counter services for the relevant agencies had been reduced in line with the MCO 2.0.

Motorists must, however, possess valid road insurance and display their e-cover notes or present it to traffic enforcement personnel upon request.

The MCO 2.0 was first implemented on Jan 13 and is set to expire on Feb 4.

Authorities have said that the order will not be in force for more than four weeks (Feb 10) and will revert to a conditional MCO after that.

This is due to economic considerations.

The MCO 2.0 was implemented following a continued surge in Covid-19 cases, which have exceeded four digits since Dec 10 last year. - Mkini
