PUTRAJAYA: The judiciary will conduct a pilot project at the Shah Alam Magistrates’ Court next month to allow traffic offenders to pay their fines online for selected cases.
A statement by the Chief Registrar’s Office said alleged offenders whose cases were fixed from Feb 2 to 5 could use the e-PG system without having to come to court unless directed to.
It listed 24 minor offences that could be settled online under the Road Transport Act 1987.
The office said that based on the pilot project, the judiciary hoped to extend the system in the peninsula from April 1, and in Sabah and Sarawak from June
It said statistics at the magistrates’ courts showed that there were one million summonses registered, with most of the offenders having paid their fines without claiming trial.
“The digitisation process to allow offenders to plead guilty will help in the speedy disposal of cases,” it said.
It said the Covid-19 pandemic required the need to practise social distancing, and the new system would enable the public to save time and money and prevent health risks.
The public may surf the judiciary’s official website at www.kehakiman.gov.my for details. - FMT
