PMO assures no compromise on the corrupt after ranking slips

The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has assured that the government will not compromise on the corrupt and will uphold the rule of law.

This is after Malaysia's corruption perception index (CPI) score for 2020 slipped two points to 51 and its ranking dropped six spots to 57.

"It must be stressed that the government's policies and commitment to combat corruption and improve good governance are clear and continuous," the office said in a statement today.

"The government has never and will not compromise on any perpetrators of corruption and stern action will be taken according to the rule of law," it added.

The PMO also reiterated that the National Anti-Corruption Plan introduced by Pakatan Harapan was still being implemented and that there was also a special cabinet committee on anti-corruption which sought to improve good governance.

Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M), in explaining the CPI score drop, said among the contributing factors include stalled institutional reforms including unfulfilled promises to table the Political Funding Bill and the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) Bill.

It also said the negative perception over several acquittals or discharges not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) granted in high-profile corruption cases last year was also a factor.

Last year, DNAAs were granted notably to Najib Abdul Razak's stepson Riza Aziz and former Sabah chief minister Musa Aman who were facing money laundering charges.

Former Sabah chief minister Musa Aman

Former federal territories minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor had also been granted a DNAA to facilitate further investigations into his RM1 million corruption case.

He, however, was found guilty in another RM2 million corruption case.

Likewise, Najib was also found guilty in the SRC International case and is still on trial for his 1MDB case.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is also on trial for corruption while other party leaders such as secretary-general Ahmad Maslan are also facing criminal charges.

This has been a sore point for Umno which is a partner in the Perikatan Nasional Plus government.

Ketereh MP Annuar Musa had hinted that one reason Zahid is allegedly pushing Umno to align with PKR president Anwar Ibrahim and take down PN is due to these court cases. - FMT
