Emergency powers not invoked yet due to good cooperation - PM

The government has yet to invoke its powers under the Emergency (Essential Powers) Ordinance 2021 to take temporary possession of private property due to good compliance by the private sector.

The ordinance provides power for the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong or any authorised persons to take temporary possession of land, buildings, or movable property for so long as the emergency is in force.

Speaking in a press conference this morning, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin specifically commended private hospitals for helping the government combat the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Even though the emergency ordinance has provisions that allow for this, we have received good cooperation from the private sector. They are prepared to give us all the help and support we need.

“For example, private hospitals as a whole are prepared to help with what we need like beds, doctors, equipment, nurses, and other medical officers.

“So even though we are under an emergency proclamation and these provisions are available to us, the pretty good response means we don’t have to enforce what is in the ordinance,” he said.

Muhyiddin was asked if the government had taken over any private assets, facilities, or resources under the emergency ordinance.

The press conference was conducted at the Prime Minister’s Office in Putrajaya with the media in separate rooms from the prime minister, Health Minister Dr Adham Baba, and Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

The government roped in private hospitals into its Covid-19 response mechanism last month because public hospitals were struggling to cope with the high number of cases.

Presently, 100 out of 129 eligible private hospitals have agreed to admit and treat Covid-19 cases.

Altogether they are contributing 1,346 normal Covid-19 beds, 65 ICU beds and 64 ventilators to the public healthcare system. - Mkini
