Sugarbook emails users with instructions to circumvent MCMC ban

Hours after the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) banned Sugarbook's website, the dating service emailed users with instructions on how to circumvent the block.

The service, which matches younger women with older men, gave two methods.

"It is unfortunate to share that Sugarbook has been banned by the Malaysian government.

"But here are the steps to access Sugarbook," it said in the email.

In the first method, the service revealed that it created an alternative link to the site.

As for the second method, it teaches users how to use Domain Name System (DNS) to bypass the block.

Its app is also still downloadable.

Sugarbook, with the motto "where romance meets finance", previously generated controversy in Malaysia although the government chose not to intervene until recently.

This was after Sugarbook published a survey titled "Top 10 Sugarbaby Universities".

In the survey, Sugarbook provided data about the number of "sugar babies" who signed up for its service at various universities.

It claimed the service was helping students with their debt and tuition fees.

"Times are hard. Our platform provides the opportunity to find economic relief during these volatile times.

"Dating someone who is more successful or experienced comes with its perks, and financial incentives are just one of them.

"They get to connect with high-net-worth individuals as well as pursue career advancements," said Sugarbook CEO Darren Chan.

South China Morning Post reported that the soliciting of sex is rife on the app, but Sugarbook said it makes combating vice and exploitation a priority. - Mkini
