KUALA LUMPUR: The first batch of Pfizer-BioNTech's Covid-19 vaccine is expected to arrive in Malaysia at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at 10am tomorrow.
The vaccines will be ferried in through flight MH604, operated by MABkargo Sdn Bhd (MASKargo), using a Passenger-to-Cargo (P2C) Airbus 330-300 plane.
The vaccine delivery from Pfizer's factory in Belgium is managed by the pharmaceutical giant, in an agreement at the global stage with the appointed delivery agent in Malaysia, DHL Express.
The 312,390 doses will be part of a larger shipment leaving from Puurs, Belgium and will be in transit at the Leipzig Halle Airport, before reaching Singapore, for delivery to other Asia Pacific countries, including Malaysia.
Notable figures who will welcome the delivery at KLIA are Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba; Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin; Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong; and Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
The Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine is the first to be given conditional approval by the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA).
As of February this year, Malaysia has secured 66.7 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines from global Covid-19 vaccine development platform Covax Facility, and via early purchases from five Covid-19 vaccine manufacturer companies.
Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will be the first to receive the vaccine.
Under the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme, 80 per cent of the nation's population will be inoculated in the biggest-ever vaccination exercise in Malaysia. - NST
