Food factory ordered to close after found operating in filthy conditions

KEPALA BATAS: A factory processing non-halal food was shut down for two weeks on Monday (Feb 8) after it was found operating in a filthy environment.

This came following a raid by enforcement officers from the state Health Department, the Seberang Prai City Council (MBSP) and the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry (KPDNHEP) at the premises located in Jalan Haji Ahmad Badawi here during a joint operation dubbed as Ops Tegar.

The department’s environmental health, food safety and quality officer Mohd Wazir Khalid said the factory, which has been operating for 50 years, had failed to meet the stipulated standards on cleanliness and was found to be in extremely unhygienic conditions.

"We also found that they process fish balls and pork-based products in the same area of the factory," he said during a press conference after the operation.

He said the temporary closure order was made under Section 11 of the Food Act 1983, adding that the company must clean up their premises before being allowed to resume operations. - Star
