Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh has called for public consultations into Lynas' radioactive waste permanent disposal facility.
This is as the Multi-Category Industrial Scheduled Waste Disposal Site (MCISWDS) that the PDF will be built at is still categorised as a Rank 1 environmentally sensitive area (ESA), she said.
Fuziah (photo, above) said under Town and Country Planning Department guidelines, ESA areas can't be developed.
"I wish to stress that the consultation process and public hearings on Lynas' environmental impact assessment (EIA) are legally wrong.
"The status of the site has to be changed first," she said in a statement today.
She added that changing an ESA's status itself requires its own public consultation and hearing process, and only then can an EIA be carried out.
The MCISWDS had been carved out of the Bukit Kuantan permanent forest reserve.
Lynas' PDF will occupy 58.25 hectares or 29 percent of the overall site.
Previously the rare earth company and the Pahang state government denied that the PDF would sit in a water catchment area.
However, the EIA has contradicted them, finding that it is located in the Sungai Riau catchment. - Mkini
