Marriage ceremonies for non-Muslims can now be held at the National Registration Department (NRD), places of worship, and non-Muslim religious association premises in areas under the movement control order (MCO), conditional MCO, and recovery MCO, effective today.
The NRD said in a statement that the decision was made by the government to enable non-Muslim marriage ceremonies which have been delayed during the MCO 2.0 period to be conducted.
“This decision was made at the Minister of Defence Technical Committee meeting No 9, chaired by Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
“However, marriage ceremonies in areas placed under enhanced MCO are still not allowed,” it said.
The statement said the NRD also updated the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for non-Muslim marriage ceremonies.
The SOPs state that marriage registrations at the NRD are not allowed to have more than 10 people, including the marriage registrar.
As for marriage ceremonies at places of worship and religious association premises, the number of guests should not exceed 10 in MCO areas, a maximum of 20 people conditional MCO areas, and not more than 30 in recovery MCO areas.
“However, the SOPs are subject to the size of the premises,” the statement said.
The NRD also said no social events are allowed during marriage registrations while gatherings at non-Muslim places of worship and religious association premises are subject to National Security Council (MKN) instructions.
