KOTA KINABALU: An agro-based park described as being underperforming will soon be placed under the Sabah agriculture and fisheries ministry to beef up its productivity, said the minister, Jeffrey Kitingan.

He hoped the Sabah Agro-Industrial Precinct will then eventually help achieve the state’s ambition of food security.

Kitingan, who is also Sabah deputy chief minister, said: “We have been importing food too much, why can’t we produce enough food for our people with our resources? We need to improve on our R&D (research and development) and train our people who are interested in agro-based industry.”

SAIP, located in Kimanis, is a technology precinct that serves as an enabler or platform for the development of agro-based industry.

Kitingan said the management of the park will be handled together with the Sabah Economic Development Authority, the state industrial development ministry and the Institute for Development Studies.

“We must work together to ensure it would not turn into another white elephant,” he said. - FMT
