Ain, youth MPs, student reps among Dewan Muda leadership programme candidates

Student activist Ain Husniza Saiful Nizam, youth MPs, and student representatives are among those chosen for the two-year Dewan Muda Malaysia (DMM) leadership development programme.

“So excited to see and converse with all the young like-minded individuals I'm about to meet on the programme!” said Ain (above) on Twitter this morning following the programme’s announcement of its chosen candidates in the last few days.

Initiated by Undi18 in partnership with Unicef and Generation Unlimited, the two-year parliamentary programme aims to bring its 222 representatives to work together in their selected “ministries” - which would focus on areas such as economics, health, education, environment and youth.

Other notable chosen youths include medical student Subashan Vandibeler, who was awarded the prestigious Rhodes scholarship, and Marscella Ling, who was the youngest representative in last year’s Parlimen Digital sitting - which was also organised by Undi18 to create a framework on how Parliament can hold its sessions virtually.

“With 2,196 applicants, we're proud to see so many young Malaysians from diverse backgrounds stepping up to the plate!” said DMM on Twitter.

According to DMM’s breakdown of its applicants’ demographics, out of the 2,196 applicants, 56.63 percent of the total figure identified as male and 42.68 percent as female - with 29 applicants being persons with disabilities (PWD).

Separately, Undi18 founder Tharma Pillai pointed out that it was a tight competition with roughly a 10 percent acceptance rate depending on the state.

DMM is a “monthly educational and capacity-building training” programme that works to educate youth representatives from across the country on the parliamentary system and policy analysis, as well as expose them to multiple issues in order to “develop effective arguments through debates”.

The youths will be mentored by leading figures in their respective fields such as astrophysicist Mazlan Othman, Teach For Malaysia CEO, and health systems expert Dr Khor Swee Kheng.

Malaysiakini understands that DMM will be releasing a comprehensive list of all its chosen youth representatives in the coming days. - Mkini
