Ahmad Maslan: Umno will not fire MPs sticking with PN

Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan has said the party will not fire its MPs who still support the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government, despite the recent decision by the party’s supreme council to withdraw support for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

Ahmad also denied claims that the party had issued “threatening” letters to MPs who still support PN.

“Some say the letters are threats. That is not a threat, it is a reminder of a party member’s ethics in complying with the party decision.

“Umno has no intention of firing (people). We intended to remind (them) of the party constitution. That is the intention of my letter which has already been given to them, who are my friends as well,” he said, as reported by BN News Online today.

Previously, it was reported that Ahmad had sent letters to all Umno MPs to state their stand before Aug 7, with regard to whether they support the PN government and Muhyiddin as prime minister.

On Aug 3, a group of Umno MPs led by party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had announced that they are withdrawing their support for the PN administration and Muhyiddin.

Two Umno ministers – Shamsul Anuar Nasarah and Noraini Ahmad – have also resigned from Muhyiddin’s cabinet, citing that they were upholding the party leadership’s decision.

Umno also recently revealed 13 letters from its MPs that were sent to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, stating the withdrawal of their support.

At the time of writing, Muhyiddin is estimated to have the support of around 23 Umno MPs.

This would mean that Muhyiddin only has support from 100 MPs – 11 shy of a simple majority.

However, on Aug 4, Muhyiddin had insisted that he still commanded majority support and promised to put himself through a confidence vote in the Dewan Rakyat in September to prove it. - Mkini
