KUALA LUMPUR: All eyes will be on the Malay rulers who are expected to convene a special meeting at Istana Negara today to discuss the current political issues, particularly the appointment of the new prime minister.

The meeting is expected to begin at 2.30pm and will be presided by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah.

The focus will be on the appointment of an MP who commands the majority support of the Dewan Rakyat as the ninth prime minister in accordance with Article 43(2)(a) of the Federal Constitution.

Yesterday, the King granted separate audiences to 114 MPs from Barisan Nasional (BN), Perikatan Nasional (PN), Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and also the independents to confirm their support for Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

The MPs from Pakatan Harapan (PH) and its allies, however, had not been granted a similar audience with the King.

Based on the statements by various parties and MPs following their audience, Ismail looks the likely candidate to succeed Muhyiddin Yassin, who resigned on Monday after losing his majority support.

The opposition MPs’ choice is PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.

Sultan Abdullah had also decreed that the new prime minister must seek a vote of confidence as soon as possible to determine his legitimacy and majority support in the Dewan Rakyat.

He also reminded party leaders and representatives to cooperate with those who were not successful and to work as a team to maintain harmony and tackle the health and economic crises. - FMT
