PETALING JAYA: A health ministry ambulance driver died in an accident involving his vehicle and a lorry at KM9.7 of the North-South highway (PLUS) heading to Skudai, Johor today at 11.58am.
Larkin Fire Rescue and Department deputy chief Mohd Suhaimi Abdul Jamal said that when firemen arrived at the scene, the four occupants, including the driver, were found trapped in the ambulance.
Suhaimi said a total of 14 members from the Larkin and Skudai fire stations and five fire engines were rushed to the scene.
It is understood that the driver and three other staff from the health ministry were on their way from the Kluang district health office to the Permai Hospital to collect Covid-19 vaccine supplies.
“Upon arrival, the firemen found the four occupants – driver Shamsul Shamsuri, 49; Rosnilam Satari, 48; Azlina Mohd Rawi, 41; and Amelia Pek Ying Hung, 26 – trapped in the ambulance,” he was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia.
Suhaimi added that the driver died at the scene and was believed to have suffered serious injuries after being pinned to his seat.
“The firemen used a rescue cutter to remove all four occupants from the wreck,” he said, adding that the rescue operation took about 11 minutes and ended at 1.24pm.
Suhaimi added that the three other occupants were injured, while the lorry driver was unhurt.
Meanwhile, Johor Bahru north district police chief Rupiah Abd Wahid said the case was being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. - FMT
