KUALA LUMPUR: Anwar Ibrahim will challenge his former research assistant’s suit for alleged sexual assault three years ago, the opposition leader’s lawyer said.
“We just received the writ and statement of claim today. We will fight it accordingly,” Ranjit Singh from the legal firm Messrs Ranjit Singh & Yeoh told FMT.
According to legal procedures, a solicitor for Anwar will now enter appearance when case management is held on Sept 9.
Lawyer Mahajoth Singh, who represents the plaintiff Muhammed Yusoff Rawther, confirmed the date.
Yusoff, 28, filed the suit on July 15 at the High Court through Messrs Abd Halim Ushah & Associates.
In his statement, Yusoff said the sexual attack took place on Oct 2, 2018 at Anwar’s home in Segambut.
According to Yusoff, he was asked by the defendant’s private secretary Shukri Saad to hand over a speech text for Anwar to deliver to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th anniversary celebration.
He claimed Anwar, 74, sexually assaulted and molested him.
There was no communication between him and Anwar for about a month after the incident, although he was still working for Anwar before his resignation on June 24, 2019.
Yusoff lodged a police report against Anwar on Dec 7, 2019.
He claimed he was accused of conspiring to bring down and damage Anwar’s political career, and this had affected his mental health.
He is seeking special, general, aggravated and exemplary damages and other relief deemed fit by the court. - FMT
