As crisis deepens, PAS digs in heels and backs Muhyiddin

PAS will continue to back the Perikatan Nasional government and Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin because it is fully committed to ensuring the success of the National Recovery Plan (NRP).

In a statement today, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man (above) said the party was also committed to taking care of people's welfare.

"We hope Malaysians will be patient and cooperate in the Covid-19 response," he said in a statement today.

Describing the ongoing political crisis as "serious", he said the party's official position on the matter will only come from the party president and secretary-general from now on.

This pledge of allegiance by PAS comes amid Umno's latest attempt to dislodge Muhyiddin.

Yesterday, Umno revealed 11 of their MPs no longer support Muhyiddin. This casts doubt on Muhyiddin's parliamentary majority - 111 during the vote on Budget 2021 last December.

Umno's revolt comes amid tensions between Putrajaya and Istana Negara, in which PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan had a role.

On July 26, Takiyuddin, as the de facto law minister, told Parliament the emergency ordinances (EOs) were revoked but shared little details on the mechanisms of the revocation.

Four days later, Istana Negara issued a rare public rebuke, claiming that Takiyuddin misled Parliament as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong never assented to the revocation and instead maintained that the EOs had to be debated and annulled through Parliament to comply with constitutional requirements.

Putrajaya relented yesterday, promising the process will take place when Parliament reconvenes in September. Hours later, Umno decided tension with the palace pushed them over the edge and withdrew support. - Mkini
