Carry out reforms, Bar tells new government

Malaysian Bar president AG Kalidas has urged the new government to uphold the rule of law.

PETALING JAYA: The new government led by Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob must carry out parliamentary and electoral reforms, says the Malaysian Bar.

In a statement, Malaysian Bar president AG Kalidas said the voice and views of the minority and opposition must be respected.

“The perpetuation and misuse of one-sided parliamentary practices and procedures will contribute to the failure of Parliament and a loss of trust and confidence in our democracy.”

Kalidas also called for reforms in electoral delineation, saying this was important to protect the “one person, one vote value”.

“Promised and approved improvements in our voter registration processes need to be immediately implemented.”

He also urged the new government to uphold the rule of law, the Federal Constitution and the rights enshrined in it, including freedom of movement, freedom of speech and freedom of assembly.

These rights, he said, must not be sacrificed in the name of Covid-19.

“It is critical for there to be public confidence in, and legitimacy of, the new administration in order for public health measures to be carried out fairly and effectively.

“The Malaysian Bar will continue to work with the government of the day, regardless of political party or persuasion, to uphold democracy and the rule of law, and to strenuously protect and defend the fundamental freedoms and rights of the people.” - FMT
