PETALING JAYA: The Regent of Pahang, Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah has told elected representatives to change and adopt a more mature, sincere and honest brand of politics.

In opening the Pahang state assembly this morning, the Regent said the change was necessary for the benefit of the nation and people, who should not be burdened by unending political turmoil or tussles for power.

“Let me remind my elected representatives again that now is not the time to grapple for power. Now is not the time for us to be in disputes. Now is not the time for us to talk without doing anything.

“Instead, this is the time for us to be united, for our nation, state and the people. Amid this pandemic, the people are placing high hopes in all of us,” he told the state assembly.

Tengku Hassanal also urged the state government and corporations to uphold environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles, telling them not to relegate it to mere rhetoric.

He said he welcomed modern development in Pahang but maintained that this was no excuse to ignore the environment and allow its destruction.

“The development and progress that we hope for must conserve the sustainability of the environment, of flora and fauna. My government must be an example in practicing the ESG principles.”

He called on the state government to increase the size of forest reserves in the state, which currently totals to 1.59 million hectares, from time to time to ensure Pahang remains the peninsula’s green lung.

Meanwhile, the state assembly has congratulated Bera MP Ismail Sabri Yaakob on his appointment as the ninth Prime Minister.

Menteri besar Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail said Ismail was the third prime minister from the state, after Abdul Razak Hussein and Najib Razak.

He said what made the Pahang people prouder was that Ismail’s appointment and conferment of the instrument of appointment were made by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, who is also the Sultan of Pahang. - FMT
