A hawker from Kepong, Kuala Lumpur, is expected to be charged tomorrow with allegedly making a false police report two months ago.
It is believed that Lim Thiam Fook (above) would be charged under Section 182 of the Penal Code for providing a public servant with false information.
If convicted, the hawker can face a prison term of up to six months, a maximum fine of RM2,000 or both.
On June 6, Thiam Fook and his 13-year-old assistant held a press conference together with Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng, where he claimed that three police officers extorted money from him on June 2, for failing to produce the letter granting him permission to operate his stall during the total lockdown period.
The hawker also accused the police officers of pouring out a pot of stew to check for drugs before taking RM500 from him to settle the matter.
When the police started an investigation, Thiam Fook was unable to pick out the police officers during an identification parade.
The next day, Lip Eng organised another press conference with the hawker, where it was revealed that the latter would retract his report.
While the MP accused Thiam Fook of cheating the police, media and the public, the hawker, however, insisted that he was telling the truth.
Thiam Fook claimed that he changed his statement to the police due to pressure and wanted the matter to be settled as soon as possible.
On June 23, Thiam Fook again changed his statement to the police, claiming that the extortion did take place. - Mkini
