Six opposition MPs have given their statements at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today over their attempts to enter Parliament on Monday.
The MPs who were at the police station since 10am today were Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng, Simpang Renggam MP Maszlee Malik, Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil (above), Damansara MP Tony Pua, Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh and Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.
The Dang Wangi police chief Mohamad Zainal Abdullah confirmed with Utusan Online that four MPs had given their statements but declined to comment if other MPs would be called in today.
Meanwhile, Pua said he gave full cooperation when giving his statement and revealed that issues raised included physical distancing and holding gatherings.
“Once again I would like to emphasise that we were not gathering but we were blocked from entering Parliament.
“As a result, we had to discuss our next approach as we have the right to enter Parliament.
“The police should run investigations on more serious matters instead of preventing MPs from carrying out their duties,” he said.
Yesterday, Malaysiakini reported eight MPs were called to give their statements. Those not present today were Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh and Batu Kawan MP Kasthuriraani Patto.
Fahmi told Malaysiakini that Kasthuri was tentatively scheduled to have her statement taken tomorrow at the same police headquarters.
He also noted that Fuziah may have postponed her appointment today as she was back in her constituency in Pahang.
On Monday, police sealed off entrances to the Parliament, blocking MPs from entering the august House.
The police later claimed they had no problems with MPs going to Parliament but said they were trying to stop an “illegal” gathering there.
According to Inspector-General of Police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani, over 206 reports were made to the police over the gathering of MPs on Monday.
As such, the police have opened an investigation into the incident under Regulation 9 and 10 of the Infectious Diseases Prevention and Control (Measures in Local Areas of Infection) (National Recovery Plan) Regulations 2021, Section 21A of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act (Act 342), Section 269 of the Penal Code, and Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
The police will be calling in all individuals involved to assist in the investigations.
