The organiser of Saturday’s #Lawan protest, Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat (SSR), has described the police’s visit to the homes of several activists involved in the protest as a form of "unethical intimidation".
It added that the police’s action of sending officers to the homes of activists to take photographs and question the activists’ family members was a breach of privacy.
“SSR condemns the action of these police officers who have clearly been sent by those in the higher-up to these activists’ houses even though every one of them has already cooperated well when they were called for investigations at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters before this,” SSR said in a statement today.
They claimed these actions by the police were a tactic to intimidate those involved in the protest to “keep quiet and only obey the oppressive, cruel government that has failed”.
SSR said it remains steadfast and will fight against any form of pressure put on the people who are only voicing out against oppression and urge the police to stop intimidating the rakyat.
Earlier, several participants of Saturday’s protest had tweeted about the police visiting their houses, including Undi18 co-founder Qyira Yusri, Malaysian United Democratic Alliance pro-tem secretary-general Amir Abd Hadi and pro-tem vice-president Dr Thanussha Francis Xavier, and activist Azura Nasron.
The police had previously questioned a number of individuals over their involvement in the #Lawan protest, including those who tweeted about the police house visits today.
The investigation into those involved in the protest is under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 and the Infectious Diseases Prevention and Control Regulations (Measures in Local Areas of Infection) (National Rehabilitation Plan) 2021.
Last Saturday, hundreds of protesters dressed in black marched to Dataran Merdeka to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin amid a raging pandemic and a worsening economy.
