DAP urges Anwar and Shafie to lead the way

Amid mounting speculations surrounding Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's resignation and his successor, the DAP has called on opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim and Warisan president Shafie Apdal to reclaim Pakatan Harapan's mandate to form a new government.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said a real alternative should be presented to counter the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government's alleged mismanagement.

"Harapan together with the opposition bloc comprising 105 MPs should not waste time but adopt a big tent approach to reclaim their mandate as a constitutionally elected government by the people.

"Only by starting from a base of 105 opposition MPs, can the Harapan Plus MPs reclaim the 2018 general election mandate that was robbed by a backdoor government comprising parties who were rejected by the people," said Lim in a statement.

He said Anwar and Shafie both bear the responsibility to work together to return the mandate of the people, as elected during the last 14th general election.

"Sticking to the failed PN government is not the solution to the problem the nation is facing when the entire government is the problem," Lim added.

Muhyiddin had conveyed his decision to resign when he met Bersatu MPs at the PN headquarters this morning, according to Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Special Functions) Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof.

If his resignation is accepted, Muhyiddin will be the shortest-serving prime minister - 17 months. This is about five months shy of Dr Mahathir Mohamad's second stint as premier. - Mkini
