DAP urges PM to splurge on rakyat, not 'buy' political support

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin would be better off spending an additional RM45 billion in stimulus packages rather than "buying" support, said the DAP.

Its secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, who has been repeatedly proposing an additional RM45 billion direct fiscal injections, said the government's plan to ease Covid-19 restrictions from Tuesday onwards will not help without more money.

"This is no different from asking a person with broken legs to move forward without a wheelchair," said Lim in a statement today.

He said the sum can be spent on monthly welfare cheques, unemployment benefits, job creation or retention programmes and grants or subsidies for businesses struggling with paying wages, rent and utility bills.

"Muhyiddin should take the opportunity to do something constructive for the rakyat even though he has no legitimacy to remain as prime minister.

"Pumping an additional RM45 billion for the rakyat will bring him better political dividends than trying to 'buy' support from individual MPs with positions or posts," added Lim.

Lim did not provide evidence of corruption. However, in recent days, several Pakatan Harapan MPs have claimed that they were contacted by someone claiming to be a political agent with overtures for them to defect.

The matter is now being investigated by the MACC.

Meanwhile, Lim said the DAP was horrified and sorrowful over the record 360 Covid-19-related deaths reported yesterday while expressing their condolences for the grieving families of all Covid-19 victims.

Lim said despite the record number of deaths, the number of patients in intensive care or require ventilators are mostly unchanged compared with the previous day.

"This disturbing statistic shows that there is still no light at the end of the tunnel," he said.
