Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Pakatan Harapan leaders have issued a joint statement today, agreeing to strengthen the parliamentary institution.
In addition, the four leaders also acknowledged the importance of an independent judiciary and good governance.
The statement came out after a meeting lasting more than an hour today, but is short on details on what changes will be forthcoming.
“The meeting which lasted over an hour focused on the people’s interests in finding common ground on tackling the Covid-19 crisis, safeguarding lives and security from the pandemic, and freeing the people from the economic fallout of losing their jobs and income.
“Consensus has been reached on strengthening the Malaysian Parliament’s functions as a responsible and constructive institution, that performs check-and-balance on the executive so that it is more transparent and fulfils the rakyat’s wishes.
“We also agree and understand the importance of an independent judiciary, institutional reforms, and good governance to ensure a more conducive environment for the people and the country in the context of Keluarga Malaysia,” they said.
The statement was signed by the prime minister, PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and Amanah president Mohamad Sabu.
The three Harapan leaders had been invited to meet the prime minister at 2pm today, after Ismail Sabri had earlier ruled out the possibility of a unity government.
However, the prime minister had previously invited the opposition to join the National Recovery Council and a Covid-19 special committee.
Harapan has not made a decision on the matter, but Lim said that DAP would be open to consider it if the opposition is not made a rubber stamp.
The joint statement today is silent on any role the opposition might play in the new administration, or specific plans for strengthening the Parliament and other institutions mentioned in the statement. - Mkini
