Large fire engulfs plastic recycling facility in Klang

A large fire at plastic recycling facility in Klang has razed an estimated 90 percent of the affected area.

Despite dramatic videos being circulated on social media, however, firefighters report that no one was hurt during the inferno.

According to a Selangor Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson, the fire was reported at 8.22pm on Wednesday at the facility located on Lorong Sultan Mohamed 1 – within an industrial area near North Port, Port Klang.

Fire engines from 11 fire stations were scrambled to tackle the blaze from as far away as Serdang 37 kilometres away, with the first firefighters arriving on the scene at 8.35pm.

It took more than two hours to bring the fire under control at 10.51pm, but efforts to douse the flame are still ongoing.

North Klang OCPD Nurulhuda Mohd Salleh said the fire had engulfed the entirety of the recycling facility and also affected the office building of a neighbouring logistics company.

It involved a disused storage area for plastic material, but the cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

Meanwhile, videos from the scene have been posted by Klang municipal councillor Lee Fu Haw, showing thick columns of smoke billowing from the large fire.
