PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Muhyiddin Yassin will announce the coalition’s official stand on its support for a prime ministerial candidate this evening.
Bersatu Supreme Council member Muhammad Faiz Na’aman said all Bersatu leaders had been asked to stay silent until the former prime minister announces the party’s position.
“This morning, we were informed that Muhyiddin would make an announcement about the decision and PN’s stand on (Umno vice-president) Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s candidacy.
“We have been asked to keep our mouths shut on who PN will support as prime minister,” he told FMT.
Earlier, Utusan Malaysia reported that Muhyiddin, who resigned as prime minister on Monday along with his entire Cabinet, is expected to announce “good news” today.
However, Bersatu information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan refused to elaborate further on what it could entail, and left it to Muhyiddin to do so.
Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman had confirmed earlier that Barisan Nasional MPs had unanimously chosen Ismail as the bloc’s candidate for the nation’s top job, after a meeting last night attended by all 42 of the coalition’s MPs.
Tajuddin said Ismail would also receive sufficient support from Bersatu and PAS MPs to enable him to get a simple majority of 111 seats in the Dewan Rakyat.
All MPs have been instructed by the King to send a statutory declaration nominating their preferred prime ministerial candidate to Istana Negara by 4pm today. - FMT
