PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, whose government now looks to be on the brink of collapse, is expected to meet all party leaders who are aligned to him today.
Among the items on the agenda are a plan to bring forward the parliamentary sitting to next week and to dissolve Parliament.
A party insider said the venue of the meeting has yet to be decided but will likely be held at the Prime Minister’s Office.
“The meeting is expected to be held after the Cabinet meeting today,” he told FMT.
He said they will discuss the question of Muhyiddin’s majority support in the Dewan Rakyat and the way forward.
“There seems to be pressure on the prime minister to hold a motion of confidence earlier and not to wait until September’s Dewan Rakyat sitting,” he said, adding that a decision on the matter is expected to be taken today.
Asked on speculation that Muhyiddin may resign, he said: “If he wanted to resign, he would have done it but now it’s all about following the laws.”
He added that MPs aligned to Muhyiddin are still backing him.
According to reports, 15 MPs from Umno had withdrawn support for Muhyiddin and his administration either through public or statutory declarations.
The opposition bloc has 105 MPs from Pejuang, DAP, PKR, Warisan, Parti Sarawak Bersatu, MUDA and Amanah. This includes former education minister Maszlee Malik, who is an independent. With the 15 MPs from Umno, those against Muhyiddin add up to 120 out of the total 220 MPs, leaving the prime minister with only 100.
Another party leader said they would discuss the possibility of dissolving Parliament but “nothing is concrete yet”.
“We will discuss this during the meeting later today,” he told FMT.
He said that if Parliament was dissolved, it would make way for either general elections or a caretaker government.
“But this is not the right time for general elections. We will wait to see what everyone (party leaders) says today,” he added. - FMT
