NGO says sorry over Merdeka video gone wrong

Ikram said the main message of the video was to show the current reality among some Malaysians who tend to label other races negatively.

PETALING JAYA: Muslim NGO Ikram has apologised over a Merdeka-themed video with racist remarks, saying its original intention had been to instil patriotism.

The NGO said the main message of the video was to show the current reality among some members of the Malaysian community who tend to label other races negatively.

“Ikram believes that this stereotype needs to be stopped, especially since it can be picked up by children from an early age.

“As members of the community, parents in particular should always set a good example and educate their children with the noble values of unity in this country,” it said.

Ikram said it had taken note of the positive and negative comments from netizens and other parties regarding the video.

“Out of a sense of responsibility to maintain and preserve harmony between races, Ikram has removed the video on all social media platforms.

“As a welfare organisation, Ikram strives to always convey good messages and advice to all Malaysians regardless of race and religion,” it said.

In the video titled “Mak, Dah Siap!” which went viral today, a Malay father is shown describing Indians and Chinese in derogatory terms and stereotyping them as “gangsters” and “drunk drivers”.

Later on, the son shows his mother his completed homework of a drawing of a Malay, Chinese and Indian – with the Malaysian flag in the background – with racial slurs and stereotypes under the Chinese and Indian characters.

The video then has the boy saying: “I was not born racist, but I was taught.”

Throughout the video, a disclaimer on the top says: “The racist words observed in this video are for filming purposes only and should not be practised at all.” - FMT
