Higher Education Minister Noraini Ahmad is the latest cabinet member from Umno to resign.
In a statement, the Parit Sulong MP said she resigned to follow the party’s recent decision to withdraw support for the Perikatan Nasional government.
“I would like to express my appreciation to the prime minister for giving me the opportunity to serve as the higher education minister.
“However, based on the decision made by Umno supreme council on Aug 3, 2021, I as the chief of Wanita Umno, abide by the party direction and resign from my position as a minister and cabinet member with immediate effect.
“The party’s decision would be executed during the next Parliament session,” she said.
Noraini also expressed her gratitude to all of the ministry’s staffers and related stakeholders who have helped her during her term of service.
Earlier this week, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that the party no longer supports PN and claimed that it has thus annulled its legitimacy as a federal government.
Noraini was the second cabinet member to have resigned citing the party decision, after Shamsul Anuar Nasarah resigned as energy and natural resources minister.
Shamsul Anuar, who is third-term Lenggong MP, resigned minutes before Zahid held a press conference on Aug 3 to declare the party’s withdrawal. - Mkini
