The opposition has a united front with 105 MPs backing PKR president Anwar Ibrahim as their choice for prime minister.
The task for Anwar now is to close the gap and get at least six more MPs for a majority in the Dewan Rakyat.
Multiple sources have confirmed that besides Pakatan Harapan's 88 MPs, Anwar (above) has support from Warisan, Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang), Parti Sarawak Bersatu, and the two independents on the opposition bench.
Warisan president Shafie Apdal had earlier confirmed that his party would support Anwar after he failed to secure a majority himself.
Warisan Youth chief Azis Jamman further confirmed that they have signed statutory declarations (SDs) supporting Anwar.
"The ball is now in Anwar's court to deliver," Azis tweeted.
Anwar will be competing against Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who is believed to be in the lead at the moment.
Besides backing from Umno and BN, Ismail Sabri is also expected to get support from PAS and Bersatu.
Earlier, a lawmaker from Sarawak's ruling coalition GPS said they had agreed to support Ismail Sabri in principle - giving the Bera MP enough parliamentarians to form a government.
However, tongues are now wagging after GPS chairperson Abang Johari Openg gave vague remarks to the media that the party would leave the matter "to the wisdom of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong".
This is being interpreted by some quarters as GPS abstaining from choosing a prime minister candidate.
Abang Johari and Petra Jaya MP Fadillah Yusof later confirmed that GPS did submit SDs to the palace.
However, both GPS leaders declined to reveal who the coalition is backing.
All MPs have been ordered to inform the palace of their prime minister of choice by 4pm today. - Mkini
