Parliament hamstrung by Putrajaya, Deputy Speaker Azalina expected to quit

Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Azalina Othman Said is expected to resign from her position.

Sources with knowledge of the matter told Malaysiakini that Azalina was frustrated with Parliament being hamstrung by Putrajaya.

This includes the legislature and powers of the speakers and deputy speakers being "amputated" of their role to keep the executive in check.

She was also reportedly disappointed with the suspension of Parliament which was viewed as an erosion of democracy.

The Pengerang MP had been appointed as deputy speaker last year following the change in government.

She has been a vocal critic of the government's move to shutter Parliament during the emergency, saying the legislature had been emasculated.

Parliament finally convened last week but was thrown into turmoil on Thursday after the King issued a royal rebuke against de facto Law Minister Takiyuddin Hassan over misleading the Dewan Rakyat.

This was after Takiyuddin claimed that the emergency ordinances had been revoked, despite not receiving royal assent.

Following this, Parliament went into recess, with the sitting disrupted after Covid-19 cases were detected among officers in the House.

The sitting on Monday was then delayed indefinitely, again due to Covid-19.

The opposition has accused the government of using Covid-19 to obstruct Parliament proceedings.

Parliament is expected to reconvene only in September, where the government said it would finally table the emergency ordinances for debate and revocation. - Mkini
