PAS and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) have expressed their support in the nomination of Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob as prime minister.
PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man (above, right) said party lawmakers have signed statutory declarations (SD).
"PAS unanimously supports Ismail Sabri and we have prepared SDs over the last few days," he told Malaysiakini today.
Sarawak-based GPS also reportedly threw its support behind the Bera MP in the numbers race to become the next premier.
“We have agreed in principle to support Ismail Sabri to become prime minister, but our SDs will only be dispatched after our GPS meeting this afternoon,” Santubong MP Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jafaar was quoted as saying by Free Malaysia Today.
He added that Ismail Sabri was seen as a veteran and a well-liked, experienced leader with tremendous experience in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic over the last 17 months.
Wan Junaidi is a member of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) supreme council and a former member of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) cabinet.
PBB is the main component in GPS, which was a key partner in the collapsed PN government with its 18 MPs.
Earlier, Umno was also reported to have unanimously supported its vice-president to replace Muhyiddin Yassin who resigned as prime minister after losing majority support of the Dewan Rakyat.
It was after a total of 15 Umno MPs withdrew support for Muhyiddin's leadership, that the PN government fell.
PAS and Umno were allies in forming the Muafakat Nasional coalition after the country’s 14th general election.
Ismail Sabri is expected to receive the support of 115 MPs in total, including those from Bersatu, in his bid to become the ninth prime minister.
All MPs have been asked to provide SDs by 4pm today to declare their support for a prime ministerial candidate. - Mkini
