PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Muhyiddin Yassin has disobeyed the King by stipulating conditions in nominating the coalition’s prime ministerial candidate, an Amanah leader alleged.

Amanah vice-president Mahfuz Omar said that according to the letter issued by the Dewan Rakyat speaker, MPs are to nominate their candidate of choice with no conditions attached.

“This means MPs from PN lied to the King in their statutory declarations when they said their support was without any conditions set,” he said in a statement.

In confirming PN’s support for nominating Ismail Sabri Yaakob as the next prime minister to lead the “new Perikatan Nasional government”, Muhyiddin said it came with some conditions.

This included that those facing court charges should not be named to the Cabinet.

Mahfuz went on to say that if Ismail is appointed the next prime minister, the government he would go on to form would be unstable.

A political crisis was bound to reoccur, the Pokok Sena MP said.

“Hence the King needs to look for a new way to ensure that the next prime minister to be appointed will not be intimidated by internal politicking or be bound by party interests.”

Earlier today, Muhyiddin, who resigned as prime minister on Monday, confirmed that all 50 PN MPs were backing Ismail for the top post.

This comprised 31 members from Bersatu, 18 from PAS and one from STAR. Another four independent MPs who were “pro-PN” had also voiced their support for Ismail, he said.

And should Ismail be appointed prime minister, Muhyiddin said his successor’s Cabinet must be made up of individuals who had integrity, were reliable and free from any criminal charges in court. - FMT
