ROS move aimed at deregistering Umno, destroying grassroots - party youth leader

An Umno Youth leader has alleged the existence of a plot to deregister Umno and eliminate the party's grassroots.

Terengganu Umno Youth chief Tengku Haphiz Tengku Putera said this is based on the Registrar of Societies’ (ROS) latest stance on the party’s deferred election.

Yesterday, the ROS declared the deferment as “invalid”.

Speaking at a broadcasted press conference today, Haphiz (above) characterised it as a “political move” against the party.

“I am very sure this was done ‘in the scheme of things’ and to kill off Umno’s grassroots.

“And the objective is to deregister Umno from the political drama facing the country,” he said.

He also questioned the timing of the decision, pointing out ROS previously had no reservations about Umno’s move to defer party polls.

Yesterday’s ROS decision came hot on the heels of a split among party MPs between a pro-Perikatan Nasional (PN) faction led by party vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob and an opposing faction led by president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Earlier this week, Zahid showcased 11 MPs who had withdrawn support for PN.

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and Ismail later responded saying PN continued to enjoy support from a majority of lawmakers.

Umno elections are held once every three years. The last was on June 30, 2018.

The party applied to defer its 2021 poll by 18 months citing the Covid-19 pandemic.

PM reported for 'lying'

Meanwhile, Haphiz along with Kelantan Umno Youth chief Noor Hariri Mohamed Noor said they have reported Muhyiddin to the police for allegedly “lying” to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong about having majority support in Parliament.

“Umno has listed at least 11 MPs who attended the supreme council meeting on August 3 and retracted support for the PM.

“If we add the two cabinet ministers who resigned - Shamsul Anuar Nasarah and Noraini Ahmad - it is clear that the PN government has collapsed as it only has 98 seats now,” Noor Hariri said during the press conference.

There are currently 220 seats filled in the Dewan Rakyat after two lawmakers passed away.

The state Umno Youth chiefs urged the police to investigate the prime minister under Section 124B of the Penal Code.

The section refers to anyone who directly or indirectly commits an activity detrimental to parliamentary democracy. If convicted, one can be jailed for up to 20 years. - Mkini
