KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin has reiterated his party’s commitment to keeping the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) government intact despite Umno’s return to spearhead the federal government.

Bung, who is also deputy chief minister, said it is also time for “new strategies” to develop Sabah.

“Sabah Umno has promised to give full support (but) we need to sit down and talk with the chief minister (Hajiji Noor) to arrange new strategies for the development in Sabah,” he told FMT when asked if his party would continue to back Hajiji, who is state Bersatu chief, to remain as chief minister.

To a question on claims that Sabah Umno would make similar moves like its federal counterparts in shaking up the status quo, he said: “For me, those comments are too early to talk about.

“This is because Sabah Umno has clearly given its commitment that we will defend GRS in any way we can.

“GRS is a good platform and it needs to be maintained. Sabah Umno is always respectful of the people’s mandate and we will continue to work with all parties under GRS,” he said.

Political analysts had previously said Sabah Umno could be eyeing the chief minister’s seat if the party replaced Bersatu as the main driving force at the federal level, despite repeated assurances from Bung that his party would keep GRS intact.

Meanwhile, in congratulating Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Bung said the fact that Umno was about to return to power in Putrajaya was down to firm efforts from the party’s leadership, particularly its president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

“We had worked and trusted in God, and finally, Allah he has granted our prayers.

“But I urge that this power be used to unite the people of Malaysia, besides developing the nation and addressing issues caused by Covid-19,” he said.

Bung said that Ismail also has an understanding of the issues plaguing Sabah which needed plenty of help from the federal government. - FMT
