Umno hopes Ismail Sabri can realise party’s aspirations

PETALING JAYA: Umno this evening expressed hope that incoming prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob would be able to realise the party’s aspirations in overcoming the Covid-19 pandemic.

Its president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said this was in line with the King’s call for cooperation among MPs, now that the political crisis has come to a close.

“It is hoped that the new government will work towards ensuring political stability before the next general election where the mandate can be returned to the people,” he said in a statement.

Zahid went on to thank all MPs who backed Ismail, the party’s vice-president, to be the nation’s ninth prime minister.

Earlier, Zahid said his main focus would be on the party’s future and vowed that he would not ignore the party as well as the grassroots’ aspirations.

“I know there are members who are concerned with the recent political developments. But Umno will still be Umno. This is my promise.”

He said the party’s main focus now was on preparing for the 15th general election.

Ismail was named as the country’s new prime minister this evening, succeeding Muhyiddin Yassin who resigned from the post on Monday. - FMT
