KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has hit out at critics who blamed him for being power hungry, leading to the resignation of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister.
The Umno president said his political opponents, who were angry that Muhyiddin had lost his position after 18 months at the helm, have been inciting the people to point fingers at the party and him for his greed for power.
"The truth is their leader had resigned after his failure to contain the Covid-19 spread. The failure had caused the majority of political parties and members of parliament to lose their confidence in him.
"It is not because of 1Malaysia Development Bhd, court cases or because there are quarters who want to seize power, as he (Muhyiddin) repeatedly accused in his address.
"If their leader had been successful in governing the country and managed the Covid-19 pandemic well, there is no reason for any party to urge him to step down.
"I forgive those who had insulted and hurled accusations at me, Umno and its leadership. I pray that Allah will forgive all of our sins and mistakes," he said on his Facebook page today. - NST
