Penang Prison Covid-19-free since September

The Penang Remand Prison has been Covid-19 free since September after adopting tight standard operating procedures (SOP).

The prison’s deputy director Mohd Suhairi Awang said the SOPs also involve convicts who had to attend court proceedings before returning to prison.

“We are also taking the measure of isolating convicts with symptoms to a special building to avoid any Covid-19 infection and with vaccination, there is no issue if the convicts turn up in court.

“Meanwhile, new convicts who have yet to be vaccinated will be isolated to avoid further infections if there are those among them who have contracted the virus,” he told reporters when met at the Penang Remand Prison compound today.

Earlier, he received 2,000 packets of cakes and muruku from Malaysia Hindudharma Mamandram chairperson, N K Thanabalan in conjunction with the Deepavali celebration on Nov 4.

Suhairi said currently, all 2,238 inmates at the prison had been vaccinated with Cansino since last September.

He said all 331 officers and personnel at the prison, including those not in uniform, had also been fully vaccinated.
