Parties in Johor polls hit by string of vandalism

JOHOR POLLS | Several political parties in Johor have complained about vandalism of their campaign materials, particularly billboards which were either pushed over, slashed, or torn.

They included billboards belonging to Perikatan Nasional (PN), PKR, DAP and Muda.

Yesterday, PKR's billboard of its president Anwar Ibrahim at Felda Titar 1 in the Tenggaroh state seat was tilted over.

The billboard where Anwar's face and the PKR flag were printed was also torn up.

PKR's Zulina Johari is contesting against BN's KK Raven, who is the incumbent in the seat, having won with a 5,765-majority in the last general election. The other candidates are PAS' Roslan Nikmat and Pejuang’s Mohd Fierdaus Abd Rahman in the seat.

Meanwhile, DAP’s Pekan Nanas candidate Yeo Tung Siong complained that his billboard in Kampung Melayu Raya was also torn up.

The billboard carried his face calling for "Cikgu Yeo" to be retained along with the Harapan logo.

His team lodged a police report last night.

"I do not hold grudges but I am disappointed by the political immaturity," he said.

Yeo, the incumbent, is facing challenges from BN's Tan Eng Meng, PN's Tan Chin Hock and Pejuang's Abd Rashdi Abd Hadi and Warisan's Hihsamuddin Busri.

In Puteri Wangsa, Muda also lodged a police report last night after two of their billboards were toppled.

The billboards located at Taman Gaya and Jalan Ayu, carried their candidate Amira Aisya Abd Aziz, who is also the Muda secretary-general.

Her campaign representative condemned what he described as "gutter politics".

Amira faces BN's Ng Yew Aik, PN's Low Kah Yong, Pejuang's Khairil Anwar Razali and Parti Bangsa Malaysia's (PBM) Steven Choong.

In Tiram, Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal complained that several PN billboards bearing PN chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin's face were vandalised.

Some of the billboards were tilted over while other say Muhyiddin's face was torn up.

"Politics of cowardice, they fear a poster," he said.

PN is being represented by PAS' Karim Deraman in Tiram. He faces BN's Azizul Bachok, Pejuang's Abdul Aziz Harun and PBM's Azmi Ali. The incumbent is PKR's SS Gopalakrishnan who is defending the seat.

Meanwhile, PKR and Muda also saw friction in Larkin after Muda flags were put up by attaching them to poles put up by PKR.

Muda's Larkin candidate Rasid Abu Bakar later met with PKR over the matter.

"We agree that they were the ill work of our opponents to pit us against each other.

"The matter is resolved and we will continue with matured politics," Rasid said on Twitter.

Larkin is the only seat where PKR and Muda are clashing. PKR's candidate is Zamil Najwah Arbain.

The other candidates are BN's Hairi Md Shah, Zulkifli Bujang and Pejuang's Mohamad Riadz Mohamad Hashim.
