PN leaders treated to dance show at 800-strong Chinese dinner

JOHOR POLLS | The Perikatan Nasional (PN) leadership was treated to a colourful dance show at a Chinese-style dinner that saw around 800 people in attendance last night.

The dinner event, hosted at Austin International Convention Centre in Johor Bahru, also saw the presence of Chinese businesspersons and community leaders.

Most notably was tycoon Tan Choon Hwa, who is the executive chairperson of the family-owned TCH Resources Group.

He also holds directorship in various firms involved in electronic payment, property, manufacturing and hospitality.

A giant projector screen named PN chairperson and Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin, Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin and Gerakan president Dominic Lau as the guests of honour.

The Chinese businesspersons joined the PN leaders at a long table in front of the stage together. Also at the table was Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal.

Occasionally, the businesspersons can be seen in deep conversations with the political leaders.

Dance performances

The remaining people in attendance were seated at some 80 tables behind the guests of honour as they were served Chinese cuisine.

They were entertained by a series of dance performances to the tune of "Candyman" and "Ain't No Other Man" by Christina Aguilera, "Pump It" by Bond and "Upside Down" by Paloma Faith, to name a few.

The large dinner was hosted amid campaigning for the Johor polls.

Muhyiddin was also invited to deliver a speech where he ripped into former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak for his corruption cases.

The Pagoh MP also sought to assuage minorities’ concerns about Bersatu's Islamist partner in PAS, stating that they had nothing to fear.

‘We were invited’

After the event, Gerakan's Ng said the event last night was not organised by PN but they were invited by the "local Chinese community".

However, it was unclear who exactly organised the event as the business leaders present were coy.

Ng added that he was unaware of the performances at the event as they were arranged by the organisers.

He also backed Muhyiddin's assurance that the Chinese community had nothing to fear about PAS.

"It has been proven... We saw when Muhyiddin was the eighth prime minister, he invited PAS MPs to become ministers and it was clear they never raised anything about hudud," he said

Ng added that the large turnout at the dinner reflected the Chinese community's support for PN.

Campaigning for the Johor polls started on Feb 26. Johoreans will go to the polls on March 12. - Mkini
