PAS VP: No need for polls yet, let PM work

PAS believes that the public would not be keen on holding a general election soon, according to party vice-president Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah.

Speaking to reporters in Kota Bharu, Kelantan yesterday, he said the public prefers to see ongoing efforts to revive the economy and tackle inflation be fulfilled first.

"The rakyat are not looking forward to an election because the economy, cost of living woes and inflation are the main concerns.

"Therefore, in my opinion, we should allow the prime minister to solve these issues.

"If we were to hold elections at a time when the people are burdened... it would not be necessary," he said, according to Astro Awani.

Mohd Amar was responding to renewed attempts by multiple Umno leaders to pressure Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob into holding snap elections soon.

The current Parliament term expires on July 16, 2023.

During a special briefing for Umno leaders on Saturday, Zahid said fresh elections were necessary for political stability.

However, observers have pointed out that calls for fresh elections could be linked to several Umno figures currently facing criminal trials. - Mkini
