Task force completes probe on Thomas' book

The special task force formed to probe allegations of judicial abuses alleged in former attorney-general Tommy Thomas' book has been completed.

According to Law Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, the task force's final report had identified 19 issues which required government attention.

"The final report will be tabled to the cabinet soon," said Wan Junaidi in a statement, adding that the cabinet will have to decide on the way forward.

There is no indication if this task force report will be made public.

Wan Junaidi said the task force had spent nine months investigating the allegations made and had held 19 consultation sessions.

Last December, Putrajaya had set up the task force to probe Thomas' book titled "My Story: Justice in the Wilderness".

This book covered Thomas' stint as attorney-general from 2018 to 2020. Among others, Thomas addressed the appointment of judges, alleged interference by the executive in the judiciary and claims of selective prosecution.

The task force was headed by former Sarawak attorney-general Fong Joo Chung.

Other members were former civil servants Hashim Paijan and Junaidah Kamarudin, former judge Jagjit Singh Bant Singh and lawyers Shaharudin Ali and K Balaguru.

Thomas had explicitly told Fong back then that he would not be cooperating with the task force.

He argued that the task force was not accountable to the cabinet and would set dangerous precedence as it would affect the independence of the Attorney-General’s Chambers. - Mkini
