KUALA LUMPUR: Chevrolet has issued an alert to remind Malaysian customers of the ongoing recall campaign involving 3,725 units of Chevrolet and Saab vehicles in Malaysia.
In a statement today, the American car marque said that the campaign launched in June last year aimed to replace the Takata driver airbag inflators in affected vehicles as there is potential for fatality if the faulty airbags deploy in the event of an accident.
The affected models in the recall are Chevrolet Cruze (year 2010-2015), Chevrolet Orlando (2013-2015), Chevrolet Sonic (2013-2014), Chevrolet TRAX (2017) and Saab 9-3 (2007).
“Affected Chevrolet owners who did not receive alerts or calls due to outdated data are encouraged to contact our call team or log on to the recall campaign microsite for more details.
“For the safety of yourself and your loved ones, it is ideal to have the airbag replaced before holiday travels begin,” it added.
Chevrolet said it had been difficult to trace customers and owners due to outdated customer data and the lack of an official Chevrolet office in Malaysia.
“The reason for the recall stems from non-desiccated phase-stabilised ammonium nitrate propellant tablets inside the driver airbag inflators in affected vehicles.
“The propellant tablets may experience alteration after exposure to high temperature and daylight temperature cycles in high humidity environments.
“During deployment, the inflators may rupture if gas generation exceeds the ability of the inflators to vent the gas,” it said.
Chevrolet said that it had been conducting the recall campaign to replace these airbag inflators with the approval and cooperation of the road transport department.
It said that repairs for the recall would be carried out free of charge and handled by selected Honda-authorised dealerships.
