Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has announced that April 19 will be a holiday for all schools in celebration of Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
“We considered everyone’s well-being, including the teachers and staff of the Education Ministry.
“We understand that it will take a long time for people to go back to their hometown,” she said today after attending the Education Ministry’s Integrity and Corruption-Free Forum in Putrajaya today.
This comes after the National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) urged the Education Ministry to allocate a special holiday for teachers on April 19.
According to a report by Berita Harian, NUTP president Aminuddin Awang said the special holiday is necessary because the first day of Aidilfitri may fall on April 21 - a day earlier than the official date.
He said an extra off day will allow teachers and families to have more time to travel back to their hometowns for the celebrations.
Additionally, Aminuddin said that this would also ease road congestion on Aidilfitri weekend. - Mkini
