Mas Ermieyati, Shu Qi appointed PAC chair, deputy

 

PARLIAMENT | Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (Perikatan Nasional-Masjid Tanah) and Wong Shu Qi (Pakatan Harapan-Kluang) have been appointed as the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairperson and deputy chairperson respectively.

The motion was proposed in the Dewan Rakyat today and passed unanimously via a voice vote. Other members of the PAC have yet to be appointed.

Aside from the chair and deputy, the bipartisan PAC must consist of not fewer than six and not more than 12 MPs.

This is the first time in history that the top two in the PAC - often considered the most powerful committee in Parliament - are both women.

Mas Ermieyati was a PAC member between 2013 and 2015. She left the job for a deputy minister position while the PAC was mid-way through its probe on the 1MDB affair.

It is Wong’s second stint in the PAC after being a member between 2018 and 2022.

The PAC is tasked with examining the accounts of the country, public expenditures, and the auditor general’s reports, among others.

The committee can also look into any other matters they think are fit or that the Dewan Rakyat refers to them.

The PAC is one of five committees set out in the Parliament’s Standing Orders and has the power to summon any persons, documents, or records to facilitate their investigations. - Mkini
