The government has announced an additional public holiday depending on when Hari Raya Aidilfitri starts.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said that if Aidilfitri falls on Friday (April 21), then the following Monday (April 24) will be set as a public holiday.
If it were to fall on Saturday (April 22), then Friday (April 21) will be declared as a public holiday, the premier said.
Regardless of when Aidilfitri begins, the public will get a four-day holiday from Friday (April 21) to the following Monday (April 24).
A moon sighting will be conducted on Thursday (April 20) to determine when Aidilfitri starts.
Anwar also earlier announced that Malaysians will enjoy toll-free travel on all highways nationwide for four days – April 19 to 21 and again on April 24 – in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festivities.
The prime minister also addressed some other issues including reducing the cost of cement for affordable housing developers and additional allocation for the maintenance of federal roads.
In order to provide more affordable housing for the rakyat, Anwar said the government would work with the Cement and Concrete Association Malaysia and private developers to offer cement at reasonable prices for the benefit of those developing affordable housing.
“This will focus on affordable housing that is priced RM300,000 and below to benefit the B40 and M40 group with a maximum price reduction of up to RM5,000 depending on the type and pricing of the house,” Anwar said.
This incentive is expected to be enough to build up to 24,000 units of affordable houses, he added.
Meanwhile, he said the government has decided to allocate an additional RM250 million to maintain federal roads.
“The work will be distributed specifically for the benefit of small bumiputera contractors.
“Hence, the allocation of RM750 million for the periodic maintenance of federal roads as announced in Budget 2023 will be increased to RM1 billion,” Anwar said. - Mkini
