Sivakumar-Zahid: Bersatu accuses Anwar of being 'selective'

Bersatu has taken a swipe at Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for his selective approach in combatting corruption.

Citing the cases of Human Resources Minister V Sivakumar and Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, its information chief Senator Razali Idris said:

"Anwar says that he won't take any action against Sivakumar because he is only being investigated, not charged with any crimes.

"Yet Zahid is charged with 47 counts of corruption. Not only did Anwar not do anything but he took him on board as deputy prime minister."

Zahid's charges are related to Yayasan Akalbudi, a foundation that he leads, and from the total, 12 are for criminal breach of trust charges, eight for graft and 27 for money laundering.

Anwar's attitude towards leaders accused of corruption and misuse of power is indeed selective, Razali (above) told Malaysiakini.

"It seems that opposition to corruption and abuse of power is only specific to political rivals, but if it affects allies, it is considered slander.

"The conclusion is that fighting corruption and abuse of power is just rhetoric to confuse the people to get votes for election," said Razali.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim

Yesterday, Anwar told reporters that there was no need for Sivakumar to go on leave over the MACC probe into migrant worker approvals.

"For example, if I as the prime minister were to be called in to give an explanation and assist in an investigation, does that mean I need to resign too?

"We must know the difference. The case is still in the process of investigation, which we leave to MACC.

"If there are no charges, then nothing happens. But if there are charges pressed in court, that would be a different story," Anwar said.

The MACC probe has resulted in at least two of Sivakumar's senior aides being detained, while the minister himself was questioned and his office and home "visited" by the graft buster. - Mkini
