The Registrar of Societies (ROS) has raised an objection against Zuraida Kamaruddin’s legal action to be officially recognised as Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) president.
Legal representatives from the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) informed the High Court in Kuala Lumpur this morning.
When contacted today, Zuraida’s (above) counsel Mohamed Ashmeer Ashrof confirmed the matter, adding that the gist of the objection is that the judicial review leave application is frivolous, vexatious and an abuse of the court process.
The lawyer added that Judge Amarjeet Singh had then fixed May 11 for clarification and decide on whether to grant or deny leave for Zuraida to proceed with the judicial review.
In the event that the court greenlights the leave application, it would later set a separate date to hear parties’ oral submissions on the merits of the judicial review.
Previously, Malaysiakini reported that Zuraida last month filed a legal action to reclaim the PBM’s top post, following a protracted power struggle.
The former president-designate and 10 others were sacked from PBM in December last year, with the party announcing its new leadership line-up under president Larry Sng in February this year.
According to the cause papers, Zuraida seeks several declarations, among them that the decision by the respondent, ROS, to maintain Sng as party president is invalid and unreasonable.
She also seeks a mandamus order to compel ROS to register and acknowledge her as PBM president, to take effect from Oct 7 last year.
Among the former Ampang MP’s contentions are that ROS was negligent in not affirming her as PBM president, due to allegedly failing to consider a party letter dated Oct 15 last year that allegedly confirmed her as party president.
Zuraida left PKR for Bersatu in 2020 during the Sheraton Move that ushered in a change of administration from Pakatan Harapan to Perikatan Nasional.
However, in the middle of last year, she left Bersatu for PBM.
She also used to be a minister for two ministries, namely the Housing and Local Government Ministry between March 2020 and August 2021, and then the Plantation Industries and Commodities Ministry from Aug 2021 to November last year.
