Wisma Putra has expressed "deep concern" following the arrest of several Tunisian individuals, including opposition figure Rached Ghannouchi.
"While acknowledging that the developments constitute Tunisia's internal affairs, Malaysia remains deeply concerned about the latest political development in the country.
"Owing to his health and age, we appeal for special consideration and mercy to be accorded to Mr Rached Ghannouchi (above) during this blessed month of Ramadan," Foreign Minister Zambry Abd Kadir said.
Zambry said Malaysia hoped that there would be national reconciliation and consensus in Tunisia that would bring their people progress and prosperity.
"We always wish the best for the brotherly country of Tunisia and its people," he said.
Rached, 81, is the leader of the Ennahda party, which in 2011 won the first free election in Tunisia.
In 2021, Tunisian President Kais Saied removed the government, suspended Parliament, gave himself powers to rule by decree and took control of the judiciary.
Following this, Tunisian authorities investigated Ennahda leaders, including its vice-president Ali Laarayedh.
According to Reuters, both Rached and Ali were probed over Ennahda's finances and allegations that it allowed Tunisians to leave and join the Islamic State terrorist group.
Earlier this week, Tunisian authorities raided Rached's home and his party headquarters.
Tunisia became a democratic state in 2011 until Kais ousted the government a decade later.
